Tour Description

The Machame route is considered by many to be the most beautiful route to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Unlike the popular Marangu route, where you sleep in huts, on this route you will be sleeping in tents. The Machame route also gives you an opportunity to see three different sides of the mountain. From the towering Barranco Wall to the Western Breach, the Machame route is famous for its magnificent scenery.

Additionally, the Machame route has a high success rate because on day 3 it takes you high up to Lava Tower at 4,630m before bringing you back down to camp at 3,950m. The climb-high, sleep-low method of climbing aids in acclimatization, which gives you a better chance of reaching the roof of Africa. Although this itinerary is a little more challenging than the 7 day trip, if you are considerably fit or if you simply cannot spend as much time on the mountain, then this may be the perfect trip for you.

Tour Itinerary

Moshi to Machame Camp (3,000m) You will be picked up from the hotel in Moshi and take a 45 minute drive to the Machame Gate at 1,500m. From there, you will hike 18km to the Machame camp at 3,000m. The first day’s hike will take you into the forest for about 7 hours before you arrive the camp.
Machame Camp (3,000m) to Shira Camp (3,840m) If the skies are clear, you may get your first glimpse of Kilimanjaro and the treacherous Western Breach route early this morning. After breakfast, you will begin the 9km hike to Shira Camp with a brief lunch stop at about 3,600m.
Shira Camp (3,840m) to Barranco Camp (3,950m) This is the perfect day for acclimatization, as you will climb high and sleep low. The route ascends up to 4,600m with a 5 hour walk to Lava Tower before descending back down to Barranco camp.
Barranco Camp (3,950m) to Barafu Camp (4,600m) The day begins with an exciting scramble up the steep Barranco wall. At the top of the wall, the route then heads into the Karanga Valley across the ridges and valleys before arriving at Karanga Camp. This is where the people doing the 7 day trek stop for the night, but you will continue on a short walk to Barafu Camp, the final camp before the summit.
Barafu Camp (4,600m) to the summit of Uhuru Peak (5,895m) back down to Mweka Camp (3,100m) You will wake up at around midnight to begin your journey to the summit. After a quick breakfast, you strap on your headlamp and head in to the night. For many people, the first six hours of today are the most challenging of the entire climb. The steep scramble up to Stella Point at 5,685m is demanding but extremely rewarding. From Stella Point, the route becomes relatively flat all the way to the summit of Uhuru Peak at 5,895m. After a short stop here, you will begin the long journey back down to Mweka Camp, passing Barafu Camp to pick up the rest of your gear. This will be your longest day yet, but rest assured, you will look back on this day knowing that you accomplished something amazing!
Mweka Camp (3,100m) to Mweka Gate (2,000m) and pick up back to Moshi! Today will be a short walk to the gate where you will get your summit certificate. From there, you will be picked up and driven back to the hotel in Moshi to relax and bask in your personal glory.
